I have a studio full of fabric but, like most quilters, I still can't resist the urge to buy the newest and greatest fabrics that have just hit the shelves. But, when it comes time to make a quilt, I find I usually use a little of my older fabrics and some newer fabrics. Then I finish the top and send it out to be quilted. I truly hadn't stopped to figure out exactly what my finished quilts actually cost me.
So yesterday I sat down and, using Excel, put together a spreadsheet that gave me approximate costs. Was I surprised! The cost was far more than I expected...and that didn't even include my time.
I wondered if somehow I was overestimating my costs so I decided to see what my current project cost would be. The twin top is not completed yet but I know how much fabric I will be using so I calculated what the top would cost me in the bottom right of the chart. And, I found that my numbers were pretty close to what I had figured but slightly higher. Here's a picture of the blocks on my design wall. They still need to be sashed...in black, of course.
So I think the chart is relatively accurate. Of course the cost is considerably cheaper if you quilt the top yourself, but what is your time worth?
